“Angeschissen” at the cinema — no, that is not a review
Some headlines make the legal department nervous. So let us clarify at once: Angeschissen — roughly, “shat on” — was a Hamburg punk band. And in 1988 they played at the Fantasy Filmfest Gore Night.
A band name that sounds like a one-star review
Today, anyone writing that a film was “angeschissen” would probably be asked to reconsider their wording. In 1988, the factual response could be: “No, they are playing later.” The explanation does not make the sentence normal, but it does make it historically accurate.
Gore alone was apparently not enough
An entire evening of graphic genre cinema would have been sufficient for most people. The Fantasy Filmfest apparently regarded that as unfinished and added live punk. Presumably all that was missing was an inadequately supervised buffet and somebody starting a chainsaw in the foyer.
A small thought experiment
Imagine walking past the cinema by chance in 1988. “What is on tonight?” — “Gore Night.” — “And afterwards?” — “Angeschissen.” At that point, you would either have bought a ticket or walked away very slowly. Both reactions would have been reasonable.
Four decades of cultivated confusion
Today the Fantasy Filmfest travels through seven cities, manages festival passes and publishes its programme digitally. The spirit of 1988 is still recognisable: show films that are too strange, too wild or simply too difficult to explain in an ordinary programming meeting.
